Last September, I heard that there will be an opportunity for the students of FDR to go to Paris in December to attend COP21 as observers. Since only 10 students could go, each of us(people who were willing to go) had to answer some questions, such as why I should be considered as a candidate for this delegation, what is my vision for a sustainable world and what I am planning to do to make this vision a reality, etc. Finally, I became one of the candidates.
Since we were going to make a presentation on the effect of climate change in Peru at Marymount School of Paris and the International School of Paris, we had to prepare for it. I decided to talk about deforestation because I thought that it’s one of the most important and serious problems that are causing or being affected by the climate change.
My favorite experiences were that we got to go into the blue zone, and also that we got to meet Dr. Jane Goodall.
To go into the blue zone, you need to be accredited, and only two high schools were accredited for the blue zone: FDR(our school) and another school from Minnesota. I went to Korea Pavilion in the blue zone and saw a presentation about how they can use solar energy to desalinate sea water. Only about 30 countries had their pavilion in the blue zone; I was glad that Korea was one of them, and also that Korea’s actually doing something to contribute to solving climate change.
Dr. Jane Goodall was my role model when I was in elementary school. I would read the biography about her over and over again. What she did impressed me a lot. Saving chimpanzees' lives and saving forests, for example.
There are other experiences that I liked a lot, but those two were my favorites. COP 21 would definitely be one of the unforgettable experiences in my life.
