NHS Gives Back - Cookies and Compliments
December 16, 2017 Learning Outcomes: 3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. 4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. 5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaborative. Last week(Dec. 4-7) was NHS Gives Back week. This event had to do with Thanksgiving, and our purpose was to help people around us by giving them back what we've received. The entire NHS group divided into different groups, so we can organize different activities. My group(Leyre, Virna, Laura, Antonia, Francesca, Camila, Jae Hee and Ale) and I decided that we would organize an event called "Cookie Grams", or "Cookies and Compliments". We would have people send cookies and compliments to other people whom they wanted. For example, I would buy cookies for Leyre and send a short message, and they would give her baked cookies with a hand-written note. And we also decided that the money we gather from the event will go towards the Worker's Breakfast in our school. Our idea and event were amazing. Around 150 people signed up for it, and we were about to earn around 800 soles. Obviously, we made the most money out of all the NHS group and we got a prize at the end - Krispy Kreme. I was really proud of our work, because we were the ones who planned, started, and conducted the event. We started the event, and ended it successfully. I was part of the baking group(within our group), and I had to bake 52 cookies. Even though I was busy with finals and all, I spent my time baking the cookies; this shows my commitment towards NHS event and service. I had a purpose, and I wanted to achieve that purpose, so I was committed and did the work. On the day of delivery, we all gathered at Ms. Rosen's class to finish packing and start delivering. Some of us were putting cookies to the bags, the others were putting the hand-written notes to the bag. We all worked collaboratively, and were able to finish the work quickly. I usually enjoy working alone, but working altogether was actually really great this time.

Sembrando Vida - Movie Ticket Sale
August 23rd, 2017 Learning Outcomes: 2. Demonstrate that challenges undertaken developing new skills in the process. 4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. 6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. Today during advisory, two people from the Organización Sembrando Vida came and explained us about their organization, what they do, and what event they are organizing for fundraising. Basically, Sembrando Vida is an organization that builds schools in the remote areas in Peru and provide the schools with materials and services for teaching. And they said that they're organizing a movie day on Semtember 10th in Jockey Plaza and asked us for help in selling the tickets. So I volunteered to sell the tickets, 9 of them, which cost 25 soles each. I volunteered because I thought this was a great opportunity to help the children in need for education and contribute to the society. I wanted to see if I could seen the tickets to an elementary class so they could all go as a class. So I decided to send an email to the Elementary school principal Ms. Rynerson. I haven't really written these types of emails before, so I tried my best to sound formal and polite and convey my message clearly. So I did send her an email, however, the time and schedule did not work out so well, so I couldn't sell the tickets to the elementary kids. I sold the tickets to some of the neighbors near me, but I couldn't sell all of them. So at the end, I decided to buy the remaining tickets myself and give out the tickets. That way I was helping the society in several ways; I sold the tickets, so the money goes to the organizations. And I gave out the ticket to the kids who were raising money on the street; I helped them, as well. The fact that I sold ALL the tickets shows my commitment to this service activity. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the society in various ways; I hope to participate again if there's another opportunity like this one. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/03/20/americas/peru-floods-mudslide-toll/
Lots of places in Peru have been affected by the flood and heavy rain, and most are damaged. There have been consequences of school suspensions in the country. At first, it was only 2 days of suspension, but then they extended it to 4 days, and now they extended 3 more days. I didn't understand the reason of suspension as Lima looked fine and I was not affected by the floods. However, after seeing the news articles and photographs, I understood why and also how serious the problem is. Today, I went to the Oli Foundation located in San Isidro to help packing the relief supplies. What I did there was assorting clothes into different categories, like men's winter/summer clothes, women's winter/summer clothes, etc. Even though it was a simple task, I was proud I could actually contribute to making the situation better. I hope the situation gets better soon and the people get back to their normal daily lives. |
