This semester has been the best semester I've had in Roosevelt. Not that I got the best grade. But I did improve a lot throughout the semester, given that my gpa increased by 1 compared to my interim grade. Anyway, by the best semester I mean that I had the best teachers, best friends, best classes, best everything. I enjoyed the semester way more then I did any other semester. I'd call this semester the best one also because I think I finally figured out what I want to study in college.(Well, of course I did know that I want to study engineering. But which engineering?) I thought I would never figure out what I liked better in between chemistry and physics. But after finishing this semester, I found out that I'm more passionate towards chemistry. I got excited every time I went to chemistry class and every time we did a lab. I also loved writing lab reports.(You might not believe me, but it's true.) I loved how there was nothing at first and I actually create an entire lab report with the processes and all. If I had a lot of homework including writing the lab report, I would always work on the lab report first.
I have always thought that my worst subjects are language subjects. So I worked twice as hard on those subjects than other ones. I tried to do the works for those subjects before any other ones(except for chemistry). and I finally earned 7 for both language subjects, English and Spanish. From this, I learned once again that effort does not let you down. English Lang. & Lit. HL 11: Dr. Clinton Riah is an outstanding student, and her efforts have produced some very strong results in these last few months. Riah’s recent FOA was truly a model of clarity, insight, and con dent performance. Likewise, her work tracking an editorialist showed how careful and thoughtful she is when looking at data and understanding how arguments get constructed. His comment on my FOA: 9 10 5 5 This was an outstanding presentation, Riah. This showed what a perceptive reader you are, and how effective you can be when you present research, analysis, and critical perspectives on a text. You deftly framed the topic, gave illustrative examples, and offered detailed analysis that had a strong and clear connection to the main topic. In fact, the ONLY question I had was: are all the fingers male? In other words, in the slide with all the examples, it's clear that most of the fingers belong to other people, and that those fingers are silencing a woman. But in the two examples you offered us, the fingers seem like they could be the women's own fingers, asking the AUDIENCE to shut up and listen to THEM. Seems like there is some ambiguity there. Anyway, a small criticism of an overall wonderful presentation. I will be very, very sad to see you go, Riah, if what you shared about your impending departure is true. Math HL 12: Ms. Heykoop Riah is an exemplary students, she works hard and responsibly and never gives up. It is a pleasure to have Riah in class! Chemistry HL 11: Ms. Rebancos Riah has demonstrated achievement of the expected learning outcomes addressed this semester. She has approached this subject with outstanding focus and organization, as re ected in her exemplary performance in all her assessments. Well done, Riah! Physics HL 11: Mr. Swanson Riah works extremely well in the class to ensure understanding through practice and peer discussion. She is a very strong student. A goal for her would be to develop communication skills in class to begin working through any misconceptions with peers in class. I call on her for participation, but more can be done. Spanish B SL 11: Ms. Martinez Riah has had a very positive and consistent start to the course. Her work is always of good quality. We will work on editing her writing. Well done! Business & Management SL 11: Mr. Chen Riah is the top student in the class.

This semester has been a great semester. I didn't really suffer as much as I used to before in general, and I actually enjoyed going to classes, learning and doing projects and all. All the projects I've done for this semester turned out really good. Starting from the coding final project, to World History commemoration project. I even enjoyed the finals. I mean, I was really worried before the exams, but then when I went in to the exam hall and was taking it, it was actually really fun, probably because I knew what I was talking about and what I was seeing. I never thought that writing an essay would be exciting. I didn't think I would be able to finish the world history essay in 1 hour, but I was able to. As soon as I saw the prompt, I got really excited and started writing, and wrote the essay for the entire hour, nonstop. And the results were also good as well. I was less stressed about the classes in general. Until last semester, I was really stressed about lots of classes.(Drama, PE, English, World History, Math) But not anymore, except for math. I'm still kind of stressed about math. Math is still really difficult for me. The concepts that we've learned this semester were tough, at least for me, so it was hard to understand each concept fully. I thought I spent more time doing math this semester than the last one, but I guess it wasn't enough. I should try to spend more time studying math, until I understand it fully.
These are the comments I got from the teachers: Math HL: Ms. Heykoop Riah is having a fantastic semester. She comes with her questions all the time and works very hard. I encourage her to worry less, she is an amazing student and her results will demonstrate it. I really enjoyed going to school this semester. I loved all the things that I did in school and all the works I had to do, including the Personal Project. The PP has been a great opportunity for me to think deeply about my passion and what I like to do. They were hard, but I feel proud that I've finished everything and I actually had fun while doing all those works. This year I had to take one IB course, which is HL math because I took 10th grade math last year. I was worried that I might not be able to do well and survive HL math. I even thought like "what's the point of skipping one year of math and being in advanced class if I can't get good grades?" But the final result was good. I got a 7(out of 7). I was SO glad when I found out that I was getting a 7. I'm glad that my efforts paid off. I will work harder next semester. 작년에는 죽을둥 살둥 하며 겨우겨우 쫓아갔던 학교 수업들인데, 올해는 여유를 가지고 훨씬 더 맘 편히 임할 수 있었다. 걱정했던 과목들조차 결과가 좋았다.
Here are the comments from my teachers: Math HL : Ms. Heykoop Riah has been working very hard, asking questions every morning, and this shows her great level of commitment. She did very well in her final exam, especially in Paper 2. Keep up the good work, Riah! English A : Ms. Lutyens Riah is a diligent and insightful student who has grown tremendously over the first semester. Her analytical skills are strong and she shows determination to challenge herself. Her comparative essay was impressive. Spanish B : Mrs. Liñan Riah had a solid first term in Spanish. She has shown an excellent growth in most of the skills. Riah works hard and uses her time wisely to complete her classwork accurately. She is consistently prepared for class, actively participates in the lessons, and is an absolute joy to have her in class. The majority of Riah’s daily work shows a good level of effort. Riah did a great job investigating and presenting her projects about Women’s Rights and Pollution in the World. She included very good, specific information and amazing facts as well. It is great to see that Riah is gaining more confidence and competence during her oral presentations. I look forward to her continued growth next term. World History : Ms. Defer Riah is a good student in history. She has good reading comprehension and attention to detail in tasks. To improve, Riah should focus on deepening her content knowledge and argumentation towards questions posed. Chemistry : Ms. Petty Riah is a strong student who has done very well in science. She has chosen to be part of the extension group and leads the class in understanding difficult concepts. I can always count on Riah to complete her work on time and to the best of her ability. Drama : Ms. Baertl Riah is constantly working to improve her work. She is a terrific performer and her written work is always of high quality. PE : Mr. Arredondo Riah brings a very positive attitude to all PE classes and she participates with excellent sportsmanship. Riah collaborates well with her peers and she is always ready to help as needed. Web Design : Mr. Jordán Riah has a great attitude and is a pleasure to work with. I love her attention to detail and how she takes ownership of all her assignments. I can't wait to see what she'll come up with next semester. I think I have improved over the year, and I am proud of myself. This year was a tough/challenging year, and I’m glad I went through it well. I hope I could do better next year.
This year, I was able to make it into the ATL honor roll. These are the comments from my teachers: English A : Ms. Shapiro Riah is a dedicated student who consistently puts effort in her work and shows interest in her progress. She works well in groups and is collaborative; however, she should try and take more active part in class discussions, making sure she speaks to be heard by all. Spanish B : Mrs. Liñan Riah had an outstanding final term in Spanish B. She did very well on her final exam, earning an 8! It was great to see Riah’s enthusiasm while working on her Project: “Personal Relationships & the Internet”, where she was one of the conductors in a News Program. It was very creative and Riah made an excellent use of the target language! It has been such a treat to get to know Riah over the last year; her enthusiasm for Spanish is matched by her ability to quickly grasp abstract concepts. Her conscientious attitude has been the foundation for a successful year in Spanish B. I know that Riah may continue to excel in tenth grade and beyond. I wish Riah all the best! US History : Mr. Gerard Area of Success: Riah has shown consistent improvement in US History over the course of the year and there are examples of success in all areas. Most notably, she completed an extensive amount of research on the history of the assembly line and crafted a very clear and insightful essay on her findings. Area for Growth: Riah can continue to become more active in class discussions and activities, as she tends to stay quiet (but focused). She can improve her ability to grasp new terms and concepts and express them more comprehensively in her writing. Environmental Science : Mr. Hoover Riah has had a fantastic semester in science. Riah has done well to maintain a focus on her academic responsibilities. Her performance across all criteria is outstanding. Riah has performed at the highest levels possible. I have no doubts about Riah’s continued success in science. Riah has been a pleasure to have in the classroom and I would look forward to having her in class again in the future. Extended Mathematics 10 : Ms. Heykoop Riah has worked very hard this semester to improve her understanding and performance. She has successfully improved in most criteria but has struggled with criterion D, real world applications. She should be really proud of her accomplishment, as am I. Based on her final exam, she should review the specific skills specified on her feedback sheet to be ready for next semester’s beginning of DP math. Drama : Ms. Baertl Riah has improved so much since the beginning of the year. She has proven to be a great actress, I encourage her to participate in school productions. PE : Mr. Caparo Riah brings a very positive attitude to all PE classes and she participates with excellent sportsmanship. Riah collaborates well with her peers and Riah is always ready to help as needed. Her grade is a reflection of the effort she put into the completion of written and skills tests, as well as her daily participation. Congratulations! Web Design : Mr. Jordán I really love to have Riah in my class. She really is interested in improving her work and fights for her grade. As a teacher, I couldn’t ask for more. She is very smart and I wish her the best of luck in the future. Today, there was a 3-way conference, which is a conference(meeting) between me, my parent, and my teacher. I met my English, Math, Science, History and Spanish teachers. It was an opportunity for me to reflect on my work and see how I can do better.
English Ms. Shapiro said that I’m a very good writer, and also that I’m a hard working student and she can tell that I put my effort a lot to the works I do in class. However, she thinks that I should participate more and share my opinions more in class discussion, because I don’t usually participate when there’s whole class discussion. I do share my opinions in small groups, but I don’t really feel comfortable doing it with a lot of people. And sometimes I’m not really sure if I’m understanding the question fully, so I sometimes doubt if my answer’s going to be relevant to the question or not. And although I get good-enough grades now, my goal is to get higher grades. I think I should understand the concept of the summative fully before I start working on it in order to achieve that goal. Ms. Shapiro thinks so, too. And when revising a writing, she told me to check how I can improve it or how I can make it higher quality, instead of just looking for mistakes, because I don’t have that many mistakes in my writings. Math I’m very proud of myself because I’ve got an 8 for the first summative of this semester. Ms. Heykoop also told me that I should be proud because it’s really hard to obtain an 8 in 10th grade extended math, and what’s more, I’m a 9th grader. Ms. Heykoop thinks that I’m focusing better and asking questions more than I did last semester, and I agree with it. Last semester, I talked a lot with my friends in class and didn’t concentrate very well in class. But this semester, I tried and am keep trying to listen more and learn more. And I often go and ask her questions on the reviews or homework in the morning. This helps me a lot because I see similar problems in the test and I feel very confident when solving those. I think I have to work harder and study harder in order to keep obtaining 8. Science I’m also very proud of myself because I’ve got an 8 for my first unit test. I’m so glad that I started off the second semester with a satisfying grade. I got a 6 for one of the criterions, and Mr. Hoover told me that no one among his students got higher than a 6, so that fact that I got a 6 means that I’m doing pretty well. But still, even though he says that I want to get a 7 or an 8. I think I should work harder on those criterions. He asked me if the class should be more challenging. I told him that the class isn’t easy, but it could be more challenging. I like challenging classes; they help me improve a lot. It’s just my thing; I always accomplish or finish something no matter if it’s easy or difficult. I have another unit test coming up this Friday, I hope I do well on that test, too. US History I personally think that I have done a so much better job than I’ve done last semester. First, I understand things better, second, I’m getting better grades(I think), and third, I feel much more comfortable in class than I did last semester. I think the fact that I understand things better makes me feel comfortable sharing opinions(although I only share opinions in small groups) and just in general. Mr. Gerard thinks that my organization skill is very strong, collaboration skill is also quite strong, but I still have to participate more(communication skill). I agree with him. It was kind of hard for me when I was choosing the topic for the research project, but it’s okay now. Mr. Gerard thinks that my research project is strong and great. I think it’s better than the last semester’s research project. Spanish Ms. Liñán thinks I’m a hard-working student who learns very fast and she thinks I’ve improved very much this year. She’s a great teacher and she’s the reason why I could survive in this class and improve this much. When I first came to this school, I was a student who learned Spanish for only 5 months and I was put into a phase 5/6 class. And people in my class learned Spanish for several years and some spoke Spanish with their parents. I struggled a lot at first because I didn’t really know what was going on in the class and I wasn’t confident enough to ask all the questions I have to Miss. But she believed in me and kept telling me that I could do it, so I was able to improve and be more confident. But still, Ms. Liñán wants me to participate more. She thinks I’ve improved in reading the most because even she thinks that the questions are hard and tricky, and I’m getting good grades on those reading assessments. And I also improved in writing, because I got a better grade than last semester’s writing. She thinks my writing(diary of Leo(the main character of “Blanca como la nieve Roja como la sangre”)) was very creative and organized. I hope I improve even more, and I hope to be in Spanish A by the time I go up to 11th grade. Overall, all of my teachers want me to participate more in class; not only in small group discussions but also in whole class discussions. I think that’s one of the biggest things that I have to work on. I should try to share my opinions more with others, even if I have doubts about my opinions. |
