Today I was so proud of myself because the shot put went definitely farther than before. However, I can’t throw far when I throw with proper position. I throw far when I throw however I want to. But since I have to focus more on throwing properly than throwing farther, I kept practicing with the proper position. I hope that next monday I would be able to throw far even if I’m throwing in proper position. But anyways, I’m glad to see myself improving little by little. Although I’m not like a professional athlete, I’ve improved a lot and I do shot put better than I did 2 weeks ago.

Today, I could tell that I improved compared to me on the first day of practice. Now I know the proper position and technique and how I’m supposed to “push” instead of “throw.” I could actually tell that I was throwing the shot farther than I did last class. I accomplished everything that was written on the plan: warm-ups, shot lifting, pretending like throwing(in order to learn and practice the proper position), and actually throwing it many times. By this Thursday, I’m going to compare my video from the first day of this unit with the video of a professional shot putter throwing the shot to see what I was doing wrong and how I can improve it.
Today, I learned that I’m not supposed to “throw” the shot but am supposed to “push” it towards the front. At first I didn’t understand what Mr. Percy meant by pushing, but after practicing for a few times, I understood what he meant by it. And the difference between the results of those two techniques was obvious. The shot went way farther when I pushed it than when I threw it. Here I got a picture that shows the proper position(technique) that I’m supposed to be using while throwing the shot:
Supposedly, today’s my day 1 in my action plan. It’s just today’s my second day of doing the track and field unit, so I just put day 2. The chart below shows my plan for day 1, which was today. I did accomplish everything that was on the plan. Even after I lifted the shot 10 times, the weight of the shot didn’t really feel comfortable(or lighter). I think I should do it 15 times or 20 starting from Thursday. I filmed myself throwing, and I personally think that I have slightly improved. I could actually see the difference while I was throwing the shot. I hope that I could do better next time. I feel like I’m still lacking something in my position. I should search up and watch more videos of athletes doing shot put.
These are the proper techniques that I’m supposed to be using and these show how I should practice in order to have proper position. I got this information from this website: http://www.nationalthrowscoachesassociation.com/basic_technique_for_the_shot_put.htm
I’m going to practice like this in class. I chose to practice shot put for the track and field unit. Since I have 4 days to practice shot put, I made a training/practicing/learning plan that looks like this:
I chose to do 60m hurdle run and shot put for the track and field unit. One of my teammates, Caitlin, is doing high jump and triple jump, and my other teammate, Rafaela, is doing javelin and 100m run.
I didn’t know how to do either the hurdle run or the shot put properly. But as one of the purposes of this unit is that I learn how to do those things, I filmed myself doing those so that I can compare it with myself after practicing and learning. Because this was my first semester at FDR and also because I’m kind of inactive, I wasn’t putting my effort fully and I wasn’t trying my best.
So next semester, I should try to do my best, put all my effort, be active, participate well, instead of avoiding balls or difficult things when I play sports. Here’s the link to our study guide for the unit written test: Soccer document
Skill Test reflection For soccer, we had two kinds of test: skill test and written test. First, I’m going to write a reflection upon my skill test. Here’s the link to the document that contains all the information about this water safety unit: Water Safety Document
For the water safety unit, my group(me, Abbey, Pranay and Matthew) had to make a storytelling video about how to save a drowning victim, with a rope. We had to act out a scene, pretending like one of us is actually drowning. The story goes like this: there’s a boy who went to vacation with his friends. He wasn’t conscious that the water of the pool was really deep, and he just dives into the pool. He drowns, and a life guard throws him a rope, saves him. For the project, Abbey acted as a life guard, Matthew as a drowning boy, I filmed, and the script was mostly written by Pranay. We all kind of worked on the script. I think we all did ok, except that we were supposed to put the title that Ms. Lucha has given us, but we didn’t. Next time I do this kind of presentation, or any project, I should check the instructions carefully and try to make the presentation meet all the requirements of the rubric. |
