“The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born must first destroy a world. The bird flies to God. That God's name is Abraxas.” said Hermann Hesse, in his book Demian. Everyone grows up, not only physically but also spiritually. And in the process of growing up, it's necessary that one overcomes some kind of hardship or difficulty. Without going through all the hard moments, you can't really call it "growing up." At least I think so. My life(even though I've lived for only 16 years and 8 months) hasn't always been so exciting and easy. I've gone through hard times, especially when I had to move to Peru and be in a completely different environment from Korea. New language, new school, new people. Even though I loved new things and that's why I was really happy about moving to Peru, when I got here it wasn't all as fun and exciting as I thought it would be.

I have always had this question since I was young, and I still do. I just couldn't find a person who could answer this question. That question is: let's say a fly is in a moving car. When it's resting or landing on the window or something, they wouldn't have to fly but will still be moving because the car is moving. But when they're not resting on something, will they have to fly/move at the same speed as the car in order to stay in the same position? I asked my mom, and she said she never thought about it and she doesn't know. I asked my dad, he tried to explain me, but he himself got confused in the middle of the explanation, so I never knew the answer. I was thinking of asking my science teachers, but then I was afraid they might think it's a stupid question. Maybe it's not even something related to science.
I have a younger brother, just like Holden used to. We always fight over nothing; we find faults with each other. It’s not that we really hate each other, but it’s just really hard for us, at least for me, to compliment or to say something nice. And I always wouldn’t let him do anything because he’s too young. For me, he will never be “old enough” to do something, since he’ll always be younger than me. Every time he tries to do something, I would say “No, EJ, don’t do it. You’re too young.” Which is nonsense, now that I think of it.
I think a lot of sibling goes through something like this. I see lots of relatable posts on Facebook about the relationship between siblings and how they fight. But the question here is, does EVERY sibling have problems like this? The answer would be no because there are siblings like Holden and his brother/sister. Our first unit was about short stories, and our assessment was to write a fanfiction based on one of the short stories we read. Some of the short stories we read include “Accident” by Dave Eggers, “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes, and “Rapture” by Gayle Brandeis. The canon text(the original short story) that I have chosen was “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes. It tells a story of Mrs. Jones, who was walking home, and Roger, who tried to steal Mrs. Jones’ purse. Mrs. Jones takes him home and gives him food instead of reporting him to police. In the story, Mrs. Jones tells Roger that she has done things, too. So for my fanfiction short story, I decided to write about the “things” Mrs. Jones had done when she was young and why she stopped doing them.
Here is the link to my fanfiction story: https://goo.gl/UYBV5o And here is the link to the rationale for my fanfiction story: https://goo.gl/DiaCJ8 In the rationale, I explained my story in general and some stylistic choices I have made during the writing process. For the newspaper unit we had to create a newspaper as a group. In my group, there were Erika, Gonzalo, Oscar, Ian and me. I think our newspaper was pretty good. One thing I would do differently next time is dividing the articles into named section to make it easier for the reader to identify articles of interest. There were three kinds of articles: hard news, feature news and op-ed’s. Of course it was easy for us to identify the types of the news because we were the ones who wrote them, but if we think about the readers, I think we really should have divided them into different sections.
